Why Children Ministry?

by Prince Josiah Jeyaraj

When we think about Children and the Bible, the first and the foremost incident that comes to our mind is that “Jesus explains the truth about Kingdom of Heaven through a little child” in Matthew 18. On many occasions I have come across many individuals who say “Bible has very little to say about Children”. In fact that is a false statement. Bible has lot to say about children. The Bible talks about instructions that have to be passed onto the children in many chapters. We do read that children understand the things of God; we do read in the scriptures that children fulfill the purpose of God. God uses little children to accomplish great tasks. God accepts children’s worship and lot more is mentioned in the Bible. The word “Child” or “Children” is mentioned 569 times in the Bible. That’s a Good number I believe. There are at least 2-dozen stories or incidents recorded in the Bible referred to Children or Children involved in it.

Why God wants us work with Children
1. It is a Commandment

In Psalm 78:4-7 the Bible says, “We will not hide these truths from our children but will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord. We will tell of his power and the mighty miracles he did. For he issued his decree to Jacob; he gave his law to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them— even the children not yet born— that they in turn might teach their children. So each generation can set its hope anew on God, remembering his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.”

Teaching to children and ministering to children is a commandment from God. Each one of us who relate with children at our homes, Sunday schools, schools, etc need to know that it is commandment from God that we teach the truth to the children and about the glorious deeds the Lord has done in each one of our life.

2. Children need live in the fear of God
In Deuteronomy 31:12 & 13 the Bible says, “Call them all together—men, women, children, and the foreigners living in your towns—so they may listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the terms of this law. Do this so that your children who have not known these laws will hear them and will learn to fear the Lord your God. Do this as long as you live in the land.”
So it is not just a commandment, but as long as you live, or as long as you have breath you need to call men, women and Children, and tell about the fear of the Lord. The purpose for teaching is that next generation might know the Lord and they in turn pass it onto others.

3. Children are reliable resources
The above passage also convenes Children are most reliable people on this planet earth. In 2 Timothy 2:2, the Bible says, "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others". The Reliable people are the Children.

4. Children can understand things of God
We also find in many places in the scriptures God always brought children into the Assembly so that they might know him and follow him. In Deuteronomy 6:6 – 8, the Bible says, “And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again. Tie them to your hands as a reminder, and wear them on your forehead.” In other words God wants us to make use of every opportunity we get with Children. More over Children are also called in this group with men and women, because they can understand.

Many a times we think Children are too small to understand the things of God, but we find that God instructed through the leaders like Joshua, Nehemiah to bring the men, women and Children.

In Joshua 8:34 & 35 the Bible says, “Joshua then read to them all the blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of the Law. Every command Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among the Israelites.”
In Nehemiah 12:43 the Bible says, Many sacrifices were offered on that joyous day, for God had given the people cause for great joy. The women and children also participated in the celebration, and the joy of the people of Jerusalem could be heard far away.

5. Children can experience SalvationIn 2 Timothy 3:15, the Bible says, You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.
This above verse refers to Timothy, in chapter 1and verse 5 of 2 Timothy, we find that his mother and grand mother taught him scriptures, as result of those scriptures in 2 Timothy 3:15, the Bible says it (scriptures) has given wisdom to receive salvation.

This is to tell you that our Children should be our biggest target for reaching the unreached. Just think about that and Give thanks to the Lord and pray we will have many Timothys coming out of our country.
Well don't forget to teach your children, scriptures. Make use of every opportunity.
